The rise of Neutral interiors
I’ve always been a neutral girl, and if I ever do splurge outside of natural and neutral interiors, it’s within nature’s colour hues.
Interior design trends are swooning over neutral home decor right now, but what I also love seeing is the vintage infusion of furniture, objects and ceramics. And the repurposing of what one may already own.
I’m a constant re-arranger, so a neutral home colour palette helps me keep things fresh without feeling propelled to buy something new, and IF buying new, I look for treasures rather than trends — antiques, flea market finds, art and textiles. A vintage piece of furniture ripe for stripping back and reupholstering holds far more appeal to this interior environmentalist, than something straight out of a catalogue.
Whether you’re looking to redesign a bedroom, or throw some fresh paint up on your living room walls, neutral is a fantastic place to start. You can blend modern neutral home decor and neutral home design as a quiet and calm neutral only look or as a backdrop for bold interior accents.
Fifty shades of beige
A neutral room without texture can feel cold, lifeless and less than inspiring.
For a neutral room to be vibrant, including the right balance of texture, tones and textile surfaces add depth and complexity.
After painting your walls, bring your all neutral room to life with modern home decor pieces in similar hues. Think textured cushions, antique wooden stools or your lovely vintage ceramic finds. The glorious thing about neutral colours is they work with any decor style. Whether you are modern, traditional or have a secret passion for country charm, a neutral backdrop will suit your unique interior decor tastes.
Mixing neutral home decor accessories in a wide spectrum of textures and adding soft tones is fundamental to creating an interior design that will never get old.
Contrast neutrals with pops of earthy colour
A calm, neutral home colour palette allows you to bring subtle tonal details into your design.
It’s best to choose your neutral backdrop based on how much natural light the room receives, your preference for lighter or darker walls, and what other colours you'd like to incorporate.
While they at first appear to be colourless, neutrals have a range of undertones. For example, beige might have an undercurrent of pink or yellow, while white can be slightly yellow or blue.
For a neutral room with pops of colour, choose a soft warm grey or white for the wall. You can even take it up a notch with a deep ocean blue sofa or an accent chair (or two). Feel free to mix warm hues and cool tones in order to bring out a contrast between the aesthetics. Or, you can stick to one side of the spectrum for a more decisive or purposeful atmosphere.
To add pops of colour to a neutral living room, a soft warm grey or beige for the wall is a lovely colour choice. A lovey plaster or lime wash finish (eco friendly too) is also a lovely compliment to any neutral interior.
You can always take your neutral vision it up a notch with a deep ocean blue or rust coloured sofa, chairs or accent rug. A textured area rug, a sheepskin or throw pillows in the same hue layer the space. You can include more colour with plants, books and of course art, or any interesting decorative pieces you’ve collected or purchased.
Similar to the grey Scandi-inspired interior trends, you can pair almost any other colour with neutrals — seafoam greens, fall’s leafy rusts, soft sunset pinks. Bright colour choices can make statements, but natural tones lay the foundation for a beautiful aesthetic.
