Today I invite you on a studio tour, to come behind the scenes of my artist practice. Sharing with you what happens behind-the-scenes on a typical studio day.
My studio is my happy place. A place where I work on my creative practice, develop and experiment with my ideas. A transformative space which turns from a creation space / photography studio to a print proofing & packaging and business operational space, sometimes all in one day! And for some months this space became 'homeschool' headquarters and home gym (I still workout here).
I feel extremely privileged to have a beautiful light filled space in our family home (my work commute is only a few footsteps down the hallway).
I like to wake early and workout with my online instructor (a combo of yoga, weights & cardio, 3 times a week). After I work out I like to journal and just be with my thoughts, before my family wakes and the school rollout begins .
I walk my kiddos and our dog Jack to school and back (I always have a podcast at the ready for the return walk home). This allows me to stretch my legs get some fresh-air in my lungs & sun on my face before I set to work in my studio for the day.
With my headspace in the right place I check my emails, and see what orders and activity has come in overnight. Once a week I place orders with my fine art printer. Each print is specially custom printed for my collectors. Once the prints arrive in my studio, I love taking the time to individually inspect and package them.
This is me inspection ‘Suspended Animation' 1’. Each photographic print is extraordinary at this magnified scale, they really add so much impact to a room so effortlessly. Each fine art print comes with a unique edition no. and signed 'Certificate of authenticity.
Knowing my work is going into peoples beautiful homes – the place where they feel secure and comforted is an honour. To know they have chosen my work as an extension to express their own aesthetic self-expression is a very heartwarming experience.
When I am in the creation cycle of my practice; experimenting, creating and photographing work simultaneously, my day is VERY different. In fact I almost lock myself off from the usual daily business runnings, social media (to the best of my ability). Let's just say it takes a bit of planning ahead to accommodate some ‘interruption free’ time.
I know selecting prints can be tricky and it can be hard to decide which prints are right for your home. If anyone is feeling indecisive I always encourage them to email me and send through shots of their home. I love to help and talk interiors and find the right piece for your space.
I have been sending several pieces of work to New Zealanders living abroad who are feeling a little homesick, which has been a rather personal shared experience over the last year or so. I continue to value the connections I have with to my collectors still living in my birth-land, New Zealand. I love my work and I love being a mother. Both roles fulfil my days. It has taken many years to practice being absolutely present (and not torn) in each of these important roles in my life. I still have many days I fail at both.
I feel very lucky to have a small team of contractors, who work behind the scenes with me. They are so clever, beyond capable with their skill sets and carry their own entrepreneurial spirt and drive, I just adore them.
I don’t always get everything achieved I’d like to in my day, but I try my best to finish each day in the knowledge that things are always moving forward and to walk away with a feeling of happy contentment for what I did achieve.
Thanks for following along and for your continued support and admiration of the artworks I create. You are an intrinsic part of my art practice and journey and I so dearly appreciated you.
