Art Basel, Miami, Wrap-up!

As the snow begins to come down in earnest, there are many reasons to fantasize about teleporting to Florida. But temperature aside, one of the best reasons to be in Miami in December is Art Basel and the myriad of art fairs and events that occur over the long weekend.

Even if I didn’t make it down south, I was so honoured for my work to to be there! Represented by my gallery Axiom Contemporary, The Botanist made the journey to the Scope Art Fair. In honour of her trip, I thought I’d run down some of the most exciting work I saw (via the web of course, not the Botanist’s gossip!)

A fellow Toronto artist shown at Pulse was Thrush Holmes. Incorporating vivid colours and electric neon elements, his paintings often having botanical elements (near to my own Interior Environmentalist heart) but the multidisciplinary works are unlike any still life you’ve seen.

Another exciting presentation (and maybe one of the most instagrammed!) was the Fondation Beyeler booth at the main Art Basel Fair, who displayed an installation by Italian brand Toilet Paper.  

The bright visuals, eclectic patterns and experiential activation certainly seemed in the spirit of the vibrant Miami art weekend. 

Going from a multidimensional, all-encompassing colour to the monochromatic, Berlin Gallery Kicken featured exclusively black and white photography. It was a bold move in the rainbow-decked fair but definitely caught the attention of this photographer! Klaus Rinke, Jürgen Klauke, Man Ray and Charles Fréger were among the photographers exhibited. 

For pure fun, the pink shag carpet in Wong Ping’s pink shag carpet and colourful video installation at the Edouard Malingue booth looked like the number one spot I’d take the kids! It was interesting to see the photos of the traditional Chinese waving cat juxtaposed with modern artwork and a pop sensibility!

Quite the virtual gallery-hop! And hopefully, in person in 2017!
